Cathedral is currently seeking a School Nurse.
The School Nurse plays an integral role as an advocate, liaison, and consultant on health-related issues for students, families, and employees. The person in this role is responsible for supporting the Cathedral community through expertise in school and community health and through excellent communication skills. This is a 12-month position that reports to the Head of School and meets the following responsibilities:
Health Services & Clinical Care

Oversee the health and safety of The Cathedral School by providing assessment, intervention, and care in accordance with the New York State Nurse Practice Act

Attend to sick and injured students; administer medications (prescription and limited over-the-counter) as approved by a healthcare provider and parent/guardian
-
Assess and identify student health needs, providing appropriate care, referrals, and health resources to students and families
-
Provide long-term management of students with special health care needs (pediatric diabetes, asthma, seizure disorder, etc.).

Monitor and maintain student and faculty electronic health and immunization records using the Magnus Health system, ensuring compliance with all legal and school health requirements

Adhere to all NYS/NYC immunization and communicable disease control reporting requirements

Maintain the health office with adequate medical supplies; track inventory and communicate with families regarding medication expirations (e.g., epinephrine auto-injectors, inhalers, and other prescriptions)
Collaboration & Communication

Communicate promptly and compassionately with families, employees, and appropriate outside medical professionals regarding student health matters and medical care

Notify families and, when appropriate, the wider community about relevant health concerns in accordance with confidentiality and public health guidance

Work closely with school leadership to develop, revise, and implement health protocols, including coordination with the New York City Department of Health when needed

Alert the Operations Manager to any safety or environmental issues that may impact student or staff health
Health Education & Prevention

Educate students, parents, and employees on relevant health topics, preventive care, and wellness practices

Promote a culture of health and well-being aligned with The Cathedral School’s Core Values: cooperation, courage, integrity, kindness, passion for learning, respect, and responsibility
Professional Practice & Development

Maintain active participation in the Independent Association of School Nurses and collaborate with nurses at peer institutions

Stay current with best practices, public health updates, and professional standards through continuing education and professional networking

Positively contribute to the broader School community through teamwork, presence, and commitment to student well-being
-
Be present and available on campus during school hours (7:45 AM – 3:45 PM) and for school-related events as needed

Work remotely as needed during the School’s summer break to prepare records and documents for the academic year
Athletics
-
Review health appraisal and sports clearance forms for student athletes prior to the start of each sport season
-
Follow-up contact with parents and primary care providers regarding needed clarification or missing medical information
-
Provide affiliated athletic director and coaches with cleared student lists and relevant medical information in a timely fashion
Desired Education, Work Experience, Skills, and Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
-
Registered Nurse in New York State (Current Licensure)
-
Certified in BLS
-
Considerable knowledge of child growth and development, and of common therapies and treatments for childhood illness

Familiarity with electronic health records management
-
Basic understanding of health appraisal and immunization record collection/management
-
Ability to collaborate with students, parents, colleagues, health care providers, and community organizations
-
Leadership, critical thinking, organization and decision-making skills, and ability to objectively use professional judgment
-
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
This is a 12-month role with a hiring range of $95,000 - 110,000 based on experience. Full-time employees who have completed one full year of service are eligible for tuition remission for their child/ren upon application and admission to the School.
